The Power Workers' Union [PWU] is dedicated to work towards an accident free workplace for its membership. Even today, despite the concentrated efforts of unions everywhere, far too many workers are killed and injured on the job.
The PWU has taken a strong leadership role in the health and safety of our membership. The elected representatives assisted by Staff Officers interface with employers on a regular and ongoing basis to discuss health and safety concerns.
Our members face very high risk hazards every working day in a multitude of diverse workplaces.
The PWU has always placed the safety of its members at the highest level of the union's agenda.
Our members are covered by the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario (OHSA), or the Canada Labour Code, Part II. Each of these laws provides for worker involvement in workplace Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC), or in the case of a small workplace, requiring that the workers must be represented by a Health and Safety Representative. In either case the worker representatives must be appointed by the PWU.
The PWU has appointed members to over 200 JHSCs.
Our Health and Safety Committee members and representatives are trained in the areas of workplace health & safety. These members have the task of representing the health and safety interest of the union members they represent with the goal of making improvements to make workplaces safe and healthy.
The PWU supports the Internal Responsibility System [IRS] and has worked with some of the employers of our members to enhance the IRS. The following initiatives have been approved by the PWU improve the health and safety of our members in a variety of workplaces:
This committee discusses, approves and resolves health and safety initiatives at the corporate level.
Discusses, resolves and approves radiation safety issues.
Most companies in a collective agreement with the PWU- A team is put in place to develop safety rules and the PWU is part of the approval process.
Work Protection - at the Ontario Hydro Successor companies. This committee is involved with the development of work protection rules which are continuously administered by a Tripartite Committee and any amendments have to be approved by the PWU.
Health and Safety Policies, Standards and Procedures at most companies in a collective agreement with the PWU - PWU provides input and is involved in the approval process.
PWU JHSC members and Health and Safety Representatives' duties are specified in the Health and Safety Legislation of which their workplace is covered; their accountability is to their membership through the elected officers of the PWU.
In order for the PWU to achieve a safe and healthy workplace for PWU members, the elected representatives of the PWU and the JHSC must work together, to achieve the highest level of safe work environment for all of their members.
The PWU's Goal: To work towards a workplace where no PWU members are killed, injured or exposed to hazardous substances.
